Mondays

I love Monday mornings. This Monday we had apples that were picked fresh in the fall, and before they spoiled, we peeled and cut and prepared them for applesauce. Then there were the extra cranberries that hadn't been used at Christmas. We went through them, sorting the good from the not so good...
They went into the pot with the apples, cinnamon,  nutmeg, a little apple juice and medium heat.It made fantastic applesauce.
There is something incredibly peaceful and restorative in taking on a small task and making something beautiful. Doing work that requires you to be "in the moment," focused, and undistracted is work that also has a spiritual dimension. It was Brother Lawrence, a medieval monk, who wrote his reflections on work that he called, "Practicing the Presence of God." Lawrence understood that the every day tasks of washing dishes, preparing food, and daily chores were every bit as "spiritual" as praying and worshiping.
