Snow Day in Michigan

We woke up to a foot of new snow. Some were calling it the storm of the century. Folks in Michigan were well prepared, though.
I like living in a place where the snow piles up and you are forced to stop everything and given a moment out of time. There is something about this world that cannot be tamed, controlled, or ordered. It comes spilling out as snowflakes, ice crystals, howling wind and frigid cold.
In Michigan, people rarely panic about the snow. You won't see scenes on the evening news of people skidding across icy roads. Instead, it will be stories about competent snow removal and how the kids spent their snow day. There is a peace found at the end of a shovel, putting the world back together after a snow storm.

After the snow, there was a brilliant blue sky and bright sun. Everything glistened, and shimmered, and we came inside to baked apples and an afternoon nap in the sunlight. Tomorrow the snow plows will ruin all my work and by Friday, it will be back to work and school. But for now, the world stands still in its blanket of white, and all is well.
